I let go of trying to do it all myself - here's what happenedDec 16, 2020
I’ve been in business for 12 years, and for most of that I have tried to do things on a shoestring budget. Instead of paying for experts, I spent thousands of hours learning new skills, teaching myself social media, marketing, how to build a website.
I took up as many freebies as I could to try and cobble together advice to help me move my business forward. But it has meant that my businesses were incredibly slow to grow. It has meant that I made costly mistakes. It has meant that I didn’t build my businesses with longevity and scalability in mind.
When I launched The Mumpreneur Collective over 5 years ago, I decided it was time to do things differently.
I tried to understand what was holding me back from treating this like a ‘real’ business.
To give this some context, around that time my husband quit the corporate world to start his own business, and one of the first things he did was to take a loan out. More money than I had ever invested in my own business. But he saw it that he needed the money to hit the ground running and launch the business the way it needed to be launched. He was right. So why was I so terrified of actually spending money to make money?
Was I scared of failing? Maybe.
Was I scared of being too successful? Maybe!
Did I believe in what I was offering? 100%.
Did I believe what I was offering was valuable, and needed? 100%
Did I think that getting expert advice would help me reach more people, make more money and grow the business? 100%.
So I had a word with myself.... and several years ago now I started to invest. And do you know what happened?
My business grew.
I made more money.
Working the same hours.
Without the stress.
I finally felt like a ‘real’ business owner.
So how did this actually look? This is what I invested in…
A Business Mentor
to push me through my comfort zone, keep me accountable, give me guidance, to keep the momentum going, to make me strategic and to offer me new perspectives and open my eyes to new opportunities.
I outsourced to an Online Business Manager
I relinquished control of some of the admin and social media tasks to free up more time on what only I could do. Not only that but she keeps me organised and forward thinking about the next project, so things never just stagnate.
I joined memberships
to get ongoing support but also to learn what makes memberships awesome so I can implement those things into my own monthly membership, The Cocoon.
I took on an Accountant
to do my annual tax returns and also my monthly bookkeeping. I tried for ages to do my own bookkeeping but never kept it up and always felt like it was something hanging over me. The peace of mind of knowing there’s no end of year stress or nasty surprises is invaluable. She also sends me a visual graph so I am on top of my income and expenses on a monthly basis.
I’ve paid for consultants and specialists
in Facebook ads, Google ads, and copywriting to help me achieve my goals faster and stop wasting time and money chasing my tail with the things that I know are not my area of expertise.
Investing in this support has meant that without working more hours and getting more stressed, without sacrificing time with my family, and without spending hours lost in a Google rabbit hole, my business has blossomed.
So when you think about where you want to be this time next year, will you muddle on through? Or is it time you got the support you need to start really making things happen?
